As part of an ongoing series using interactivity to bring ocean datasets to life, the Exploratorium needed to turn a complex and largely invisible phenomenon. They looped in Stamen to help them visualize the interconnectedness of marine microbes at a genetic level into something that would educate, engage and delight their visitors. The exhibit needed to be informative and accurate will still maintain attractive design and delightful interaction.
We created an experience for a large multi-user touchtable that simulated the lifecycle and behaviors of representative microorganisms, providing both passive and active opportunities to learn more about this spectacular “day in the life.” The exhibit was designed to provide multiple layers of interaction to engage all audiences, from schoolchildren, the educators looking for illustrations of their curricula, and the casual observer alike.
